Navigating autism-related services and financial support can feel overwhelming for many families. Fortunately, there are programs, funding options, tax benefits, and organizations in Ontario and across Canada that may help families access therapy, services, respite care, and additional support for children with autism.

This page provides trusted resources to help parents and caregivers learn about available funding programs and financial assistance options.

Funding

Ontario Autism Program (OAP)

What is the Ontario Autism Program?

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is a provincially funded program designed to support children and youth under 18 years old who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The program helps families access services based on their child’s unique strengths and needs.

Children may qualify if they:

  • Are under 18 years old

  • Live in Ontario

  • Have a written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional

Qualified professionals may include:

  • Pediatricians

  • Psychologists

  • Nurse practitioners

  • Autism diagnostic clinics

Disability Tax Credit & Child Disability Benefit

Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a federal tax credit that helps reduce the financial burden for families caring for a child with a disability or a prolonged medical condition.

Many children with autism may qualify depending on how autism affects daily functioning and development.

Approval for the Disability Tax Credit may also help families gain access to additional financial supports and savings programs.

Child Disability Benefit (CDB)

The Child Disability Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment for families caring for a child under 18 who qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit.

This financial assistance may help families with:

  • Therapy costs

  • Medical expenses

  • Specialized programs

  • Developmental supports

  • Everyday caregiving expenses

The amount families receive depends on income and eligibility through the Canada Revenue Agency.

Families do not need to apply separately for the Child Disability Benefit. Once approved for the Disability Tax Credit and receiving the Canada Child Benefit, the Child Disability Benefit is generally added automatically.

Future Funding & Transition Planning

As children grow older, some families may begin exploring future funding and support programs for adulthood and independent living.

The Passport Program is funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and helps adults with developmental disabilities access community participation supports and daily living assistance after age 18.

Funding may help cover:

  • Community participation

  • Daily living supports

  • Caregiver respite

  • Employment supports

  • Life skills development
